Canada eTA checks before applying

  • For eTA-required countries, eligible travellers generally need an eTA when flying to Canada or transiting through a Canadian airport.
  • For most land or sea arrivals by citizens of eTA-required countries, an eTA is generally not required, although the correct passport and immigration status are still required.
  • The Government of Canada currently charges CAN$7 for an eTA application.
  • The eTA is electronically linked to the passport used in the application and does not guarantee admission to Canada.
  • Select visa-required nationalities have a separate conditional eTA route and must meet all additional requirements before using it.
