Canada eTA & U.S. ESTA Country Checker 2026
This information-only checker helps travellers understand the country-level Canada eTA and U.S. ESTA framework before using the relevant official government website. The interactive browser version lets you choose a destination and passport country and then shows the applicable country-list status, important exceptions and official-source links.
Canada eTA country-level rules
Citizens of normal eTA-required countries generally need a valid passport and eTA to board a flight to Canada or transit through a Canadian airport. In most cases they do not need an eTA solely to arrive by car, bus, train or boat. The official Government of Canada eTA fee is CAN$7.
Citizens of Canada's select visa-required countries may use the eTA route only if all 3 additional requirements are met: they held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid U.S. nonimmigrant visa; they are coming for a temporary stay, normally up to 6 months; and they are flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport with a qualifying passport. Otherwise a visitor visa is generally required.
U.S. ESTA and Visa Waiver Program rules
ESTA is for eligible travellers using qualifying e-passports from current Visa Waiver Program countries. Eligible VWP tourism or business travel is generally for 90 days or less, and an approved ESTA is required before eligible VWP travel, including qualifying land-border travel. The official ESTA fee for a new application is currently US$40.27.
Country participation does not guarantee individual eligibility or admission. Travel history, dual nationality, passport type, trip purpose and answers to the official eligibility questions can change whether ESTA or a visa is required.
What this checker does not do
This tool does not determine immigration admissibility, recommend a visa category, submit an application, take payment or replace the official government travel-document checker. It provides country-level orientation using EstaEta's current government-source country dataset.
