Can Romanian citizens use ESTA? — 2026 status

Romania is not currently listed by the U.S. Department of State as a Visa Waiver Program country. ESTA is therefore not available solely on the basis of a Romania passport.

The correct U.S. travel-document route depends on the passport or passports used, trip purpose and individual circumstances. Travellers should use official Department of State guidance to determine the appropriate visa route.

Dual nationals who also hold a qualifying Visa Waiver Program passport should check the ESTA rules for that passport and their individual circumstances before relying on the Visa Waiver Program.

Country-specific passport note

Romania is not currently listed by the U.S. Department of State as a Visa Waiver Program country.
